Interior Designer Mary Carol Garrity
The Martha Stewart of the Midwest
Anyone who lives in the Kansas City area and knows a little about decorating is in on the secret. A little town called Atchinson features a one-woman wonder brand. Mary Carol Garrity has been making her mark on home decorating for over 25 years. Interior designer, author, inspiration are just a few of the words to describe her.
Nell Hill Store - Mary Carol Garrity
When I first visited the famed Nell Hill’s store (named after her grandmother) I thought, “Wow, there is a lot of STUFF in here,” or something like that. Every corner, surface, and open space is jammed with dishes, accessories, flower arrangements, Garrity’s books, and anything else you can imagine being related to home decorating. What was even more surprising is how affordable most of the items were – before long my friend and I had racked up $800 in purchases between the two of us, amounting to around 18 bags of goodies.
Buses pull up and scores of women unload for a day of shopping. Garrity is well known on the designer show house circuit, and even opens her own home for tours and garden walks. She has become a well known lifestyle resource for her elegant, easy to replicate designs, and even more so for her welcoming personality. Adding more to my impression was the fact that she was working in the store the day I was there, assisting clients and making thoughtful comments to anyone near her.
