Color Trends For 2009 - 7 Interior Color Schemes for Summer and Fall
“For summer 2009, Pantone is forecasting a trend toward color palettes that reflect individuality and make people feel good about who they are,” states Tod Shulman, vice president of fashion, home, and interiors division at Pantone.
Taken straight from the Pantone Color Forecast for this summer are the “isms” that calibrate the colors we will be seeing in the trends:
1. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Female-ism
Feamle-ism celebrates women as being relevant, positive and beautiful through its use of medium pastels with a tinge of retro glamour.
2. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Classic-ism
Influenced by modern art and architecture, Classic-ism is almost devoid of color except for one medium blue accent. The palette emphasizes a feeling of restraint and austerity.
3. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Indeptendent-ism
With its tart, bold and gregarious colors, Independent-ism is geared toward creative artisans who are unafraid of true originality.
4. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Today-ism
The range of deep, dark shades of reddish blues and brown in Today-ism provides a proper balance to other more aggressive and colorful ranges.
5. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Absurd-ism
Rejecting rationality and uniformity, Absurd-ism allows colors to be libertarian and focuses on the challenge of combining the disproportionate.
6. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Fetish-ism
A carnal inspiration and desire for experimentation is the backdrop for Fetish-ism. The colors captivate and seduce to elicit an attitude of freedom.
7. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Surreal-ism
Surreal-ism plays with scale, combination and expectation to create unexpected, and even strange, creations.
Many of the descriptions play with your imagination, while others emphasis a particular color.Expect the deep jewel shades to continue into fall, and watch for the play between both interiors and fashion.
It’s all about light and reflection, and there are plenty of mirrored accessories to accomplish this with. Mercury balls, mirrored mosaic boxes, and accent tables with mirrored sides are easy to pull into to any style of interior.

3. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Fashion Inspired Decor
This trendy look hails from the current runway fashions and is fine for small doses. Tassels and feather-laced trims on pillows or table skirts can look luxurious and quite decadent if the feathers are colorful. Look to peacock for the best color and quality.Fashion Inspired Decor
4. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Sculpture Home Decor
Sculptures for home interiors. A table top sculpture instantly brings scale and proportion to the center of a table. Decorators are getting away from stacks of boxes and using one key piece of art as an interior focal point. It doesn’t need to be relevant or expensive – many companies such as Arteriors Home offer simple, elegant items that stand well on their own.Sculpture Home Decor
5. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Gold Home Decor
Gold Home Decor, Accessories and Accents. Gold decor keeps coming back around every few years. Decorating with gold is a symbol of prosperity, and while in these economic times it seems out of place, gold gives hope. Put away the silver for awhile and add gold tones with candlesticks or trays.Gold Home Decor
6. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Nature Inspired Interiors
Nature Inspired Home Decor - Leafy motifs on fabrics are everywhere and easy on the eyes. We love the simplicity of ginkgo leaves and the movement of viney patterns. Accent pieces such as a table with a tree trunk base are a quirky addition to any interior.Nature Inspired Decor
7. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Add Some Bling To Your Home Interior
Bling – sequins, metallic finishes, shiny threads, beading, mirrored inserts, anything reflective and shimmery. The Eastern influence of interiors uses these touches with rich, decadent colors that allow all this shine to make sense. A whole room full is unnecessary – but a touch is right up to the minute. Accent lighting, fabric throws, or small boxes work this trend well.
8. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Accessorize With Embroidery and Ruffles
Embroidery and Ruffles - Ruffles are another runway trend that may have limited life. Pillows are the best way to work the ruffles without overkill. Embroidered items evoke a more vintage feel, and add unusual textured touches.

Pantone Introduces Mimosa as 2009 Color of the Year
Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards to the design industries, has announced that Pantone #14-0848 Mimosa, is the color of the year for 2009. Mimosa is a warm, engaging yellow. Mimosa was deemed perfect for this year of change - hopeful optimism that the economic and political atmosphere will clear and provide upmost reassurance.
Pantone: “The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation.”
If you look around, Mimosa Yellow is appearing everywhere – covers of shelter magazines and catalogs, as well as on the clothing racks in all the boutiques. 2009 Interior design and decorating trends are incorperating yellows in very stylish and unique ways. Yellows will be in shades all across the color trends from pale lemon to a rich gold. Mimosa Yellow is one of the freshest and easiest colors to mix in with blues, greens, or raspberry tones. Yellow will be the biggest of the 2009 color trends.
Home Decorating 2009 - Current Color Trends: The Other Hot Colors
Watery shades of teal and turquoise will continue to be a presence with the 2009 color trends. Think of the tropical waters in the Caribbean and the charismatic mix of teal greens and blues. Teal is a color that rebounds under a different name every few years, but it appears it will be around for a while longer. The combination with brown continues to be very trendy and chic in 2009, but with the brown becoming more caramel toned.

Home Decorating 2009 - Current Color Trends - Bold Interior Colors
Shades of purple and red will boldly stomp into living areas as a go-to color. The meek will tone them down to secondary hues combined with earth tones or taupe-grays, for a softer sophisticated look. However, don’t be shocked to see entire rooms painted in a deeper version – the color hugs the area and creates warm, inviting environment. Vivid pinks will be for the ultra trendy, but you will see touches of it worm into traditional interiors. Pink is another optimistic tone that compares to the first flowers of spring, or looking through your rose colored glasses.
Home Decorating 2009 - Current Color Trends - Gray Greens
Clean gray greens round out the new color trends for 2009 with their subtle, subdued palette.
With all this optimistic thinking, the color trends for 2009 give life and lightness to a room. Paired with neutrals it is hardly somber as pops of color will be added as accents – consider navy blue, rich purple, or a crisp black for accessories.
Consumers are really looking for ways to freshen up what they already have, rather than full re-do of their rooms. If you have a room with neutral basics – a brown sofa or sage green chairs per se, then adding throws, pillows, or a grouping of accent vases in one of the 2009 interior colors is an inexpensive and easy fix.

The New Neutrals For 2009, Greige and Many Shades of Gray
At this past furniture market in High Point, NC, gray was featured as the “new neutral” in home interiors. Many of the major manufacturers showed gray in a fashion forward color scheme, combining it with shots of navy, yellow, lavender, apple green, or fushia. It was also shown with subtle shading of the same color for a sophisticated look. Gray has been on the rise in women’s fashion again as a replacement for black as it softens the harsh edges – the same theory crosses over to home interior decorating.
Decorating With Gray
Home Decorating Trends 2009 - Accessorize With Metalics
There is a strong trend toward metallic glazes on prints, or a hint of metallic yarns woven into a solid linen texture. The combination of the refined look of gray and a subtle metallic was a strong buying trend for the interior designers and the boutique owners that you will see throughout 2009 in both modern and traditional settings. I can’t stress how important metallics will be in the new home decorating trends.
Greige or Gray-Beige is a Big 2009 Home Interior Color Trend
There are many ways to easily incorporate gray into your existing scheme without breaking the bank. The most obvious is to consider paint – using a soft greige or gray-beige on your walls gives an instant lift. Benjamin Moore’s Abalone, November Rain, or Old Prairie are great choices to check out (www.benjaminmoore.com). Below is a sample of the Greige color
Interior Color Trends 2009 - Compliment Color with Nuetral Accessories
If you have a color you love on the wall already, then consider adding a solid silk or linen drapery side panel to your windows in a soft gray tone. Drapes should be hung as high as you can go, and then cascade to the floor, ending with a gentle break. It will make your ceilings look taller and your room appear larger.
Replace old tarnished fixtures with a brushed nickel or pewter finish to add in the metallic element. Throw in a little crystal to add some sparkle. Visual Comfort Lighting offers chandeliers and sconces in these finishes that will add a modern pop to any room, and I especially love the simplicity shown in the collection by Thomas O’Brien. Mix up the shades on your lighting – light colored shades where you really need the light, but then throw in black or a colored shade to make a statement.
Home Decorating Trends 2009 - Accessorize with Silver
Using silver in your accessorizing is the other easy way to update with gray. Mercury glass vases, gazing balls, or a collection of finials adds a reflective element to a dark corner. Mirrored surfaces on trays or accent pieces provide instant light and brightness. Be sure to select silver pieces that lend themselves more gray to avoid creating a harsh look.
I think embracing the new gray shades will be a good thing for many years to come. Call it what you will – mushroom, taupe, dolphin. The color adds an instant update and will enhance soft and bright colors alike.
