2010 Bathroom Design Trends - The Refresher

The Refresher – A New Concept in Bathrooms

When I was in college, I used to joke that I could cook dinner, take a shower, and go to the bathroom all at the same time in the tiny little apartment I lived in.  Now, that concept has actually been acted upon (without the cooking part) in a new bathroom concept called The Refresher.  Still in patenting stage, this major appliance contains a sink, toilet, and flexible “refresher” hose and sprayer.

The Refresher 3d Model

Featured recently at the National Kitchen and Bath show in Atlanta, this multi-functional unit can be installed in nearly any room where a utility hook-up is available.  It handles the basic human needs of showering, using a toilet, washing, shaving, etc.  It contains mirrors, space for toiletries, and outlets for electric.  Continual purified air can be pumped in, and it is bright as well as nearly soundproof.  It fits snugly into a corner taking up no more than 3 ½ feet.

The company states that it takes no more time than hooking up a washer and dryer, as long as proper drainage and water access is in place.  They feel it will work great for lake or vacation homes, offices, lower-grade classrooms, retail stores, hotels, etc.

There are no porous surfaces within, making The Refresher also mildew proof.  This low cost, full bathroom is meant to cost roughly $2,000-3,000.00, making it a much more affordable alternative to a typical bathroom.  While units are not on the market yet, the site asks that you submit your name to them if interested and they will contact you where you can purchase.  Now you can clean up anywhere, anytime!

2009 Kitchen and Bath Design Trends: Glass Countertops

Kitchen Trends - Glass Countertops

One of the biggest items I go back and forth on for use are glass countertops. As pretty as glass countertops are, it is still hard to go against something we’ve been taught for years to avoid. However, glass countertops have come a long way and are actually considered to be as durable as stone countertops in some cases.

Some of the advantages that glass countertops have in addition to being durable:

  • Naturally heat resistant (though hot pads are recommended)
  • Extremely hygienic as the material is not porous
  • Advanced textured finishes make fingerprints, dusts, and scratches less visible

One innovative company is ThinkGlass, who has taken the idea of glass countertops to a new level. Their countertops range from 1 ½” -3” thick, and every top is customized to fit the clients’ needs. Various colors, textures, and patterns are available, as well as the option to create your own look.

Clean-up on glass countertops is a breeze using glass cleaners or a mixture of vinegar and water. The look has a very high end, modern feel to it, and is showing with increasing frequency. Using glass countertops can instantly update a kitchen without having to make major modifications. Under normal use, they feel that the tops will not break, chip, crack or shatter, making them as sturdy as granite or marble countertops. The cost for glass countertops ranges depending on product between $200-300 per square foot, including cut-outs and edge treatments. ThinkGlass has certainly changed the way I think about glass, making it a product worth looking further into.

Bathroom Design Style: Black Floral Lumiere by Jaclo

Bathroom Interior Design With Jaclo’s Black Floral Lumiere

Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Sometimes a product comes along that makes you think “of course!” Jaclo has created one of those with its Black Floral Lumiere that features a shower rain canopy through a light fixture. This 12” diameter head allows for a soft, rain like effect with its 228 jets. The light is filtered internally with LED light, creating a luminous light within the shower. The fixture ceiling mounts for maximum headroom, dropping 12” from the ceiling.

Jaclo’s round Dream Light gives a more ethereal effect with its 16” diameter head featuring 352 jets. The LED lights come in white, red, amber, green, blue and warm white to create a showering experience. This fixture may be surface or flush mounted to suite your needs. An entire shower can be designed using side jets with the dream light for a customized spa-like atmosphere.
