Interior Design Style: Gandia Blasco Rugs

Kaleidoscopes of Pattern: The Caliedo Rug

Interior Design Trends 2009: Outdoor Area Rugs

Resembling a tatted lace pattern or a basket weave design, the Odos design Caliedo is a 7 ½” round hand tufted wool outdoor area rug. Gandia Blasco, renown for exterior furnishings, is taking the world by storm with exquisite rug patterns. The designs are manufactured in India with all natural materials by hand, and assure that no child labor is used.

The Caliedo outdoor area rug features a dramatic swirl of white pattern raised on a brown background. Gandia Blasco is a family business started in 1941 in Valencia as a manufacturer of bedding and blankets. The line of original carpet designs originated in 1990, but has become a force in recent years. The simple, elegant lines are expressive of the design sense valued at Gandia Blasco. The emphasis appears to be more in the simplicity of shape, evoking sensual, undulating lines.

Five Hot Area Rug Designs For 2009

Area Rugs: Contemporary - Modern Interior Design

The art of interior decorating takes on a whole new meaning with the new crop of area rugs. Vibrant colors and unconventional patterns are taking the ordinary room to the extraordinary. Wool and nylon are still heavy favorites, but unusual materials such as leather or cork are making their points known.

While custom rugs are still favored by interior designers for their unique patterns, many cutting edge designers are doing their takes on unusual patterns. Jenifer Kobylarz has created a collection for Warp and Weft using large scale concepts taken from natural imagery. Her organic shapes and rich palette lend themselves well to any room.

Area Rugs: Contemporary - The Shaggy Eyeball Rug - Modern Interior Design

The Shaggy Eyeball rug from www.sofarsonear.com will wow you with its hand woven wool and highly defined landscape. Custom colors and sizes available. So Far So Near offers a wide variety of hand tufted styles, as well as hand knotted in kinetic, modern styles.

Area Rugs: Contemporary - Capel Rugs - Modern Interior Design

Capel Rugs offers affordable alternative to the custom lines with trendy, unique products of their own. Following the “hair-on-hide” furniture trend comes a resurgence of animal skins for rugs. Cowhides in varying colors and sizes dominate the market. Their Four Corners introduction combines small squares of premium leather cut and sewn together to create a sort of mosaic design. The result is a stunning and textural appearance.

Area Rugs: Contemporary - The Rose Rug - Modern Interior Design

Taking the textural leather rug idea several steps further is Vivida designer Svetlana Shellshear. Her Rose rug offers stylized floral motifs composed of leather in dimensional layers of blossoms and leaves. Svetlana Shellshear’s arty, painterly style is original and fresh for interiors.

The new rugs offer a more unique approach to interior decorating. These styles mentioned are not content to be the backdrop, but rather the statement. Choose furnishings with restraint in order to not compete.

Design Inspiration: Bold Architectural Shapes Anchor a Room

Modern Area Rugs 2009: Geometric Shapes and Patterns

The textile and rug industry continue to invigorate interior decorating with large cage-like or lattice-influenced motifs.  This style can date itself back to the heydays of Dorothy Draper’s style influence of the ‘30’s and 40’s, in which she would use strong geometric pattern on ceilings, floors, and furnishings in a bold, brash style.

Area Rug Trends 2009: Company C

Geometric patterns are everywhere with intricate fretwork and lattice patterns casting the backdrop for a room. Many take their inspiration from Moroccan tiles and Chinese trellis.  Company C features a green and white interlocking pattern that will work with minimalist textures or welcome bright florals.  The strength of a geometric pattern is that is it so versatile in both modern and traditional interiors.

Area Rug Trends 2009: Phillip Gorrivan collection

Two colors are commonly used; one for ground and one for the outline of the geometric.  The impact is created through the lines intersecting.  While some make a more masculine statement with bolder tones, softer colors give a delicate and elegant balance.  Duralee Fabric’s Phillip Gorrivan Collection contains many combinations of wonderful geometrics, combining lush textures and rich color.  His Foliage patterns comes in many colors, most notable the green and brown cut velvet frise’.  Imagine this fresh look on a headboard to anchor a room.  Combine with soft solids and a bold pop of floral for a look to love for years.

Keep in mind that while this pattern is enjoying resurgence, it is hardly a new or trendy look.  Incorporating this bold statement into a room will still have a current feel  years from now.  The architectural lines appeal to many styles and work well when combining patterns.
