2009 Summer Color Trends For Home Decorating And Interior Design

Color Trends For 2009 - 7 Interior Color Schemes for Summer and Fall

“For summer 2009, Pantone is forecasting a trend toward color palettes that reflect individuality and make people feel good about who they are,” states Tod Shulman, vice president of fashion, home, and interiors division at Pantone.

Taken straight from the Pantone Color Forecast for this summer are the “isms” that calibrate the colors we will be seeing in the trends:

1. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Female-ism

Feamle-ism celebrates women as being relevant, positive and beautiful through its use of medium pastels with a tinge of retro glamour.

2. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Classic-ism

Influenced by modern art and architecture, Classic-ism is almost devoid of color except for one medium blue accent. The palette emphasizes a feeling of restraint and austerity.

3. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Indeptendent-ism

With its tart, bold and gregarious colors, Independent-ism is geared toward creative artisans who are unafraid of true originality.

4. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Today-ism

The range of deep, dark shades of reddish blues and brown in Today-ism provides a proper balance to other more aggressive and colorful ranges.

5. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Absurd-ism

Rejecting rationality and uniformity, Absurd-ism allows colors to be libertarian and focuses on the challenge of combining the disproportionate.

6. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Fetish-ism

A carnal inspiration and desire for experimentation is the backdrop for Fetish-ism. The colors captivate and seduce to elicit an attitude of freedom.

7. Color Trends For 2009 - Summer and Fall: Surreal-ism

Surreal-ism plays with scale, combination and expectation to create unexpected, and even strange, creations.

Many of the descriptions play with your imagination, while others emphasis a particular color. Expect the deep jewel shades to continue into fall, and watch for the play between both interiors and fashion.

Painting a room a shade of the new pinks adds a flattering glow.  Sherwin Williams “Cherries Jubilee” adds a rosy glow without being too girly.  Pair with chocolate brown and greens for a more modern effect.

Spring 2009 Interior Decorating Trends

Home Interior Decorating Trends for Spring 2009

The recession may be in full swing, but some of the new decorating trends would make you believe otherwise.  Lavish color and patterns, sparkle and theatrical spunk inundate our senses and create a sense of luxury.

Decorating With Crystal

Crystal has now become a huge design statement, overcoming its old fashioned reputation.  It is showing up on everything as a glittery accent.  Ronald Redding’s Cinnabar wallpaper becomes an exciting addition to any room with optional crystal accent applications.  Every fabric company seems to be offering textiles encrusted in sequins, Swarovski crystals, metal beads and other types of bling.

Tattoo Inspired Interiors

Ed Hardy, move over.  The tattoo-inspired generation is making its way to textiles with swirling art and graphics of skulls, hearts, and roses.  While not for everyone, the edgy, rock and roll aura will be a trend for the new generation of home owners.  Watch for tattoo graphics to adorn bedding, throw pillows and even chair fabrics.

Compliment Green Design With Organic Shapes and Patterns

Taking a cue from forms in nature, the new trend of organic shapes lends itself to complement green design.  The use of sustainable and recycled materials continues to be strong, and designers are looking for more unusual ways to incorporate it.  The Cumulus chandelier from Les Fournis Bleues drips with crystals attached to its recycled aluminum screening, creating a cloud on a rainy day.

Gothic Inspired Interiors

Gothic inspired architectural shapes are showing up on furnishings as well as fabrics. This tile-like shape known as the quatrefoil translates as a four-lobed shape.  Historically it was found in churches and cathedrals of the Gothic Revival and Renaissance periods, but is truly fresh in decorating right now.  Find it in fabrics, furniture, mirrors, and everywhere in between.

These are just a few of the hot new trends for spring – watch for bright shots of color alongside soft neutral palettes that will incorporate many of the new looks.  Fashion and interior design continue to close the gap between them, so look for many inspirations to come directly from your local boutiques.

Green and Brown Decor

Decorating Style 2009:  Decorating With Chocolate Brown and Green

Cutting edge design enthusiasts are always on the move for the next big color combination. For the last few years, blue and brown has dominated the palette, shifting from light tones to dark. However, those who love warmer colors have insisted that the blue is looking tired, and are turning to a fresh green to use with the brown instead.  Look for green and chocolate brown decor to continue gainint strength well into next year.

Decorating Style 2009 - Combinations of Green and Chocolate Brown

Brown has become the popular neutral of choice, being able to carry its weight when paired with nearly any color. The new yellow-green tones liven up this palette, and are appealing to a broad range of decorating styles.

The acidic apple green is a fantastic juxtaposition against dark brown. It literally jumps into action in a room, especially when used in larger patterns on furnishings. Romo feature this combination throughout its new collections, and throws in an accent of yellow for good measure. The rich chocolate brown calms these kinetic colors to make them appear easier on the eye and more livable. The overscaled patterns work well for modern interiors.

Decorating Style 2009 - Chocolate Brown and Green Fabrics

Highland Park & Philip Gorrivan Collection has taken the trend to different level by making the green a more earthy color, and tossing in off white. The result is a sophisticated and elegant look. His geometric patterns give a current twist to an old motif, and work perfectly in today’s eclectic schemes. The luxurious shiny velvet textures are inviting to the touch, and create a timeless look.

Used inside the home or out, the chocolate brown and green color trend is sure to have some staying power for the next few years. This combination makes it easy to add in the trendy colors of orange or chartreuse, or the traditional feel of merlot or gold.

Eight Must Have Decorating Accessories For Spring 2009

Spring’s Must Have Accessories for Your Home

It’s the time of the year to find some splashy new updates for decorating your home. These are the top trends to infuse with your current interiors:

1. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Yellow Home Decor

Yellow is the color of the year! Bring in some sunshine and happiness with a collection of small vases, pillows, even a bowl of lemons will do.

2. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Mirrored Finish Furniture, Decor, & Accessories

It’s all about light and reflection, and there are plenty of mirrored accessories to accomplish this with. Mercury balls, mirrored mosaic boxes, and accent tables with mirrored sides are easy to pull into to any style of interior.

3. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Fashion Inspired Decor

This trendy look hails from the current runway fashions and is fine for small doses. Tassels and feather-laced trims on pillows or table skirts can look luxurious and quite decadent if the feathers are colorful. Look to peacock for the best color and quality.Fashion Inspired Decor

4. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Sculpture Home Decor

Sculptures for home interiors. A table top sculpture instantly brings scale and proportion to the center of a table. Decorators are getting away from stacks of boxes and using one key piece of art as an interior focal point. It doesn’t need to be relevant or expensive – many companies such as Arteriors Home offer simple, elegant items that stand well on their own.Sculpture Home Decor

5. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Gold Home Decor

Gold Home Decor, Accessories and Accents.  Gold decor keeps coming back around every few years. Decorating with gold is a symbol of prosperity, and while in these economic times it seems out of place, gold gives hope. Put away the silver for awhile and add gold tones with candlesticks or trays.Gold Home Decor

6. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Nature Inspired Interiors

Nature Inspired Home Decor - Leafy motifs on fabrics are everywhere and easy on the eyes. We love the simplicity of ginkgo leaves and the movement of viney patterns. Accent pieces such as a table with a tree trunk base are a quirky addition to any interior.Nature Inspired Decor

7. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Add Some Bling To Your Home Interior

Bling – sequins, metallic finishes, shiny threads, beading, mirrored inserts, anything reflective and shimmery. The Eastern influence of interiors uses these touches with rich, decadent colors that allow all this shine to make sense. A whole room full is unnecessary – but a touch is right up to the minute. Accent lighting, fabric throws, or small boxes work this trend well.

8. Spring 2009 Decorating Trends: Accessorize With Embroidery and Ruffles

Embroidery and Ruffles - Ruffles are another runway trend that may have limited life. Pillows are the best way to work the ruffles without overkill. Embroidered items evoke a more vintage feel, and add unusual textured touches.

Pantone Introduces Mimosa as 2009 Color of the Year

Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards to the design industries, has announced that Pantone #14-0848 Mimosa, is the color of the year for 2009. Mimosa is a warm, engaging yellow.  Mimosa was deemed perfect for this year of change - hopeful optimism that the economic and political atmosphere will clear and provide upmost reassurance.

Pantone: “The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation.”

If you look around, Mimosa Yellow is appearing everywhere – covers of shelter magazines and catalogs, as well as on the clothing racks in all the boutiques. 2009 Interior design and decorating trends are incorperating yellows in very stylish and unique ways.  Yellows will be in shades all across the color trends from pale lemon to a rich gold. Mimosa Yellow is one of the freshest and easiest colors to mix in with blues, greens, or raspberry tones. Yellow will be the biggest of the 2009 color trends.

Home Decorating 2009 - Current Color Trends: The Other Hot Colors

Watery shades of teal and turquoise will continue to be a presence with the 2009 color trends. Think of the tropical waters in the Caribbean and the charismatic mix of teal greens and blues. Teal is a color that rebounds under a different name every few years, but it appears it will be around for a while longer. The combination with brown continues to be very trendy and chic in 2009, but with the brown becoming more caramel toned.

2009 Home of the Year

Home Decorating 2009 - Current Color Trends - Bold Interior Colors

Shades of purple and red will boldly stomp into living areas as a go-to color. The meek will tone them down to secondary hues combined with earth tones or taupe-grays, for a softer sophisticated look. However, don’t be shocked to see entire rooms painted in a deeper version – the color hugs the area and creates warm, inviting environment. Vivid pinks will be for the ultra trendy, but you will see touches of it worm into traditional interiors. Pink is another optimistic tone that compares to the first flowers of spring, or looking through your rose colored glasses.

Home Decorating 2009 - Current Color Trends - Gray Greens

Clean gray greens round out the new color trends for 2009 with their subtle, subdued palette.

With all this optimistic thinking, the color trends for 2009 give life and lightness to a room. Paired with neutrals it is hardly somber as pops of color will be added as accents – consider navy blue, rich purple, or a crisp black for accessories.

Consumers are really looking for ways to freshen up what they already have, rather than full re-do of their rooms. If you have a room with neutral basics – a brown sofa or sage green chairs per se, then adding throws, pillows, or a grouping of accent vases in one of the 2009 interior colors is an inexpensive and easy fix.

The New Neutral in Home Interior Decorating

The New Neutrals For 2009, Greige and Many Shades of Gray

At this past furniture market in High Point, NC, gray was featured as the “new neutral” in home interiors. Many of the major manufacturers showed gray in a fashion forward color scheme, combining it with shots of navy, yellow, lavender, apple green, or fushia. It was also shown with subtle shading of the same color for a sophisticated look. Gray has been on the rise in women’s fashion again as a replacement for black as it softens the harsh edges – the same theory crosses over to home interior decorating.

Decorating With Gray

Home Decorating Trends 2009 - Accessorize With Metalics

There is a strong trend toward metallic glazes on prints, or a hint of metallic yarns woven into a solid linen texture. The combination of the refined look of gray and a subtle metallic was a strong buying trend for the interior designers and the boutique owners that you will see throughout 2009 in both modern and traditional settings. I can’t stress how important metallics will be in the new home decorating trends.

Greige or Gray-Beige is a Big 2009 Home Interior Color Trend

There are many ways to easily incorporate gray into your existing scheme without breaking the bank. The most obvious is to consider paint – using a soft greige or gray-beige on your walls gives an instant lift. Benjamin Moore’s Abalone, November Rain, or Old Prairie are great choices to check out (www.benjaminmoore.com). Below is a sample of the Greige color

Interior Color Trends 2009 - Compliment Color with Nuetral Accessories

If you have a color you love on the wall already, then consider adding a solid silk or linen drapery side panel to your windows in a soft gray tone. Drapes should be hung as high as you can go, and then cascade to the floor, ending with a gentle break. It will make your ceilings look taller and your room appear larger.

Replace old tarnished fixtures with a brushed nickel or pewter finish to add in the metallic element. Throw in a little crystal to add some sparkle. Visual Comfort Lighting offers chandeliers and sconces in these finishes that will add a modern pop to any room, and I especially love the simplicity shown in the collection by Thomas O’Brien. Mix up the shades on your lighting – light colored shades where you really need the light, but then throw in black or a colored shade to make a statement.

Home Decorating Trends 2009 - Accessorize with Silver

Using silver in your accessorizing is the other easy way to update with gray. Mercury glass vases, gazing balls, or a collection of finials adds a reflective element to a dark corner. Mirrored surfaces on trays or accent pieces provide instant light and brightness. Be sure to select silver pieces that lend themselves more gray to avoid creating a harsh look.

I think embracing the new gray shades will be a good thing for many years to come. Call it what you will – mushroom, taupe, dolphin. The color adds an instant update and will enhance soft and bright colors alike.

2009 Home Decorating Trend Watch

Home Decorating Trends 2009: Interior Colors

Purples, soft blues, metallics, golden greens, grays, yellows…these are the interior colors you will see throughout 2009 in home decorating. Vibrant colors with lots of pop and sizzle will be tempered with neutrals to make them grounded and livable, creating a youthful, yet sophisticated style. However, the old solid + floral + striped fabric equation is being set to the side, replaced by unexpected new mixes. Throw in some fur – faux or real, shearling, burnished metallic leathers, eco-friendly vinyls, textural linens, and some heavy distressed wood…and well, you’ve created quite a conversation. There is a lot of look mentioned here, but making nod to one or two of the trends may be all you need to spunk up your room’s look.

home trends 2009

Home Decoration Trends 2009: Fabrics

Fur seems to be one of the big decoration trends for 2009, and has reached a fervor pitch. There is a plethora of pillows, throws, bedding, seat cushions, fabrics and rugs being offered in both fake and real fur. Leaving the hair on the hide is a popular trend in leather furnishings that shows both texture and color variances. Most of the faux furs are created from a blend of polyester, Modacrylic, and acrylic fibers that feel very luxurious, and are just as lovely as the real thing. Visit www.eco-luxuryfur.com to see throws and pillows made from a New Zealand paihama. They tout that the fur is sourced from humanely killed animals that are considered pests since they have populated so rapidly.

Home Decorating Trends 2009: Purple Is Rising

Home decorating trends do tend to take a page from the fashion world, and 2009 decorating trends continue to follow it by incorporating the energetic colors. Orange as well as shades of Coral are big on the spring runway as well as enjoying resurgence in home fashion this year. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the rising strength of purple being used in interiors. It had a strong hold in 2008 fall fashion, which is being carried over into the new year in various shades. Combined with grays or neutrals, it has a sophisticated, calming effect. It can be viewed as feminine and light in its lavender shades, or strong and masculine when mixed with brown.

Home Decorating Trends 2009: Accessorize With Metallics

Throw a little (or a lot) of metallic in with any color, texture, or style, and you have hit upon the biggest trend of 2009 in home decorating. Once considered to be a “luxury” material, metallics have now been transformed to be made available in a myriad of finishes. We will see them in wall and furniture finishes, leathers and vinyls, fabrics, lighting, etc. Metallics are adding a nice bridge to the dull abundance of neutrals by adding a bit of sparkle and luxe.

If there is a trendy “must-have” of 2009, then consider fur or some sort of metallic to be your item. Both will add punch to any setting, modern or traditional, and give you an immediate conversation piece. Be wary of over-indulging in either trend as you can quickly turn a chic room into a page out of one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces.
