Barrie Benson is a Charlotte based interior designer best known for juxtaposing modern with traditional in her signature interiors.
She transforms residences like her own 1950’s ranch with traditional pieces to create an interesting collection of periods, rooms and moods. Barrie is also known for giving architecturally traditional homes a dash of youthful energy and color with her fresh take on European and American 20th century furniture, art and collections. Examples of her work can be found in Domino Magazine, InStyle, The New York Times, andCharlotte Home and Garden. Barrie was also profiled in Garden & Gun Magazine’sarticle “SOUTHERN WOMEN: A new Generation of Women Who Are Redefining the South”.
Barrie’s background includes a liberal arts degree from Furman University coupled with an interior design degree from The University of Georgia. Barrie fine-tuned her design talents while working at Hirsch Bedner Associates where she designed interiors ranging from modern hotels in Northern Germany to classic Ritz Carltons in the deep south. After four years of fabulous travel around the world and many long hours, Barrie took a break from hotel design to teach interior design to University of Georgia students in the Cortona, Italy program — and to soak up la dolce vita!
Upon returning to the U.S., Barrie married her favorite architect and long time beau, Matt Benson. Upon moving to Charlotte in 2000 she started Barrie Benson Interior Design — specializing in both residential and commercial projects. In 2010, interior designer Charlotte Lucas joined BBID bringing with her a portfolio full of standout projects from her years of designing homes in Washington, D.C. When Barrie and Charlotte aren’t working on their latest design project, Barrie can be found playing with her two redhead kids, chasing company mascots Woody and Abe or planning her next culinary adventure…
